"Flight risk" and "No sharps" are a real and terrifying combination when it comes to the elderly and mentally distraught. Especially in China where we have a culture of caring for our parents in their old age, to end up in a home is usually a sign of significant instability...I'm not saying her sudden appearance here wasn't a little contrived but her character isn't unrealistic whatsoever sadly

Killing one child, attempting to kill the other, being locked in a basement instead of an institution, only to appear every time the plot is stuck is what's unrealistic. Her being crazy isn't the unrealistic part.

Ending up in a restricted section of a carehome is not unique to China, and it's where the mother should be if not an asylum or prison. Even after this stabbing incident the Mother is never mentioned again. She just goes back to the basement apparently.

It wasn't even contrived - it literally happened because she has the "unlucky" side of the stick. Like how Lin Ling run into 20 robbers in her life.
