I would also like to point out that sniping used to be wrong because there were agreements between voluntary scanlators so as not to waste effort.
However, money has gotten into the scanlation scene, not as a bonus, but as a requirement. This has caused (too many) groups to act in less than ethical ways in obtaining and translating, as well as in paywalling irresponsibly (like holding translations for more than 1 week).
But even more damage has been done in the form of getting the attention of publishers who see it's no longer about being a fan with skills and thus they see their profits being pilfered, and thus thousands of series and dozens of websites get hit with DMCAs.
The next part is my opinion and conjecture about what would fix this and prevent mass takedowns (should publishers agree to this):
1) All translations should be done by groups who make only enough money to keep the servers running and maintained.
OR
1) No uncensoring, no sfx translating, and all image quality ought to be 75% of the original quality.
We can see how good or bad a series is without seeing nudity, having perfectly crisp lines, and knowing the sound effects.
Either of these would have the following benefits:
- Voting with ones wallet would become far more effective because people would be more encouraged to pay if it's a story they like and wanted a better experience.
- More effective wallet votes means standards of story quality are likely to increase because it's easier to see where the money goes. Meaning: we get less trash and more higher quality stories.
Altogether, this would allow exposure, reduce DMCA takedowns, and still allow readers to read for free.
Or how manga-up (Squeenix) lets you read free the first time, but to re-read it you need to pay for it (which I think is more than fair).
