I've said "you can check it yourself", but it seems you didn't pick that up, only that I wasn't offering you the cooked answer. The only reason it was 3rd is because it's only among ONA of that year... and well, you can check there wasn't much competition. Just by completed status, you can see that there are 7,5K for Candy Boy and for the 1st of that season 15K (Eve no Jikan), right? The most popular anime of that year was Toradora, with 307K of completed, the third Code Geass with 216K if you wanted a full comparison. Do you like those big numbers? Weren't you able to reach to that conclusion yourself? And btw, the most popular one from last season only had 105K (a similar amount of different Macross titles, being the oldest one and Delta the most commonly mentioned), so you can appreaciate that the reason some series are more popular or completely unknown also depends on whether people talk about them or not.
And now about your definition, most anime hentai that in the past was popular can no longer be obtained legally, does that make them "obscure" even if some platforms they surpass the 1M views? Years ago someone made a video where you could see how in the last years porn streaming sites (without copyright of course) single titles gathered millions of views alone, and in case there are copies to be bought they can only be obtained in Japan (due some laws banning exportation). And well, Shoujo Sect is pretty well-known but only 2763 users has set it as "completed" in Anilist, whereas Rance 01 that has a lot of views on hentai platforms only has 4811. Meanwhile, Kuttsukiboshi that's less known than those two has 5837. So in the end, the same anime hentai title can be obscure or not.
In summary, come down from your ivory tower and talk with people, these things can be known just joining otaku clubs/associations and going to conventions. Or talking with your friends, or even their parents because they've seen the same old titles when their children were little. But not going and imposing your criterion on forums and hoping they'll clap at you.
Edit: I just realised the title I said at the top, Inferno Cop, is more popular nowadays than I thought, with 20K. And that one is on Youtube, posted by an official source. And when I talked with others IRL eight years ago more people knew about Ninja Slayer, even if that one barely reaches the 5K. Quite an irony, heh?

to me? yes

they can only be obtained in Japan (due some laws banning exportation)
still within my point of obscure

it was 3rd is because it's only among ONA of that year
oops, missed that

The most popular anime of that year was
wait, why are you comparing to the most popular?
I don't understand what the conclusion here, that the Candy boy is way way lower? by comparing to the top?

So in the end, the same anime hentai title can be obscure or not
that's my point

the reason some series are more popular or completely unknown also depends on whether people talk about them or not
still my point about bubble

come down from your ivory tower and talk with people, these things can be known just joining otaku clubs/associations and going to conventions. Or talking with your friends, or even their parents because they've seen the same old titles when their children were little
thankfully, I grew up in an environment where practically everyone around me watch anime and read manga
so we talk about it often at school
so I never have the need or drive to go to a conventions, which didn't exist back then. I don't think it is exist there even now

But not going and imposing your criterion on forums and hoping they'll clap at you
thank you

Do you like those big numbers?
Inferno Cop, is more popular nowadays than I thought, with 20K. And that one is on Youtube, posted by an official source. And when I talked with others IRL eight years ago more people knew about Ninja Slayer, even if that one barely reaches the 5K
that's why I asked for some definition,
because I know not everyone uses those websites to track their anime
so those numbers mean nothing

that's why I didn't just sort my list by popularity and pick the lowest one that I liked
and that's why I made up my own definition

you're the one who first challenged my pick

I'm not going to keep with your inconsistency. Twisting words and warping their meaning is what people who don't care do until others get bored of them. No matter how old you are, you talk like someone without reading comprehension, empathy or intellectual honesty. Even pointing out your failed logic didn't make you repharse it. Rejoy because I won't bug you anymore. Now keep the road clear.

I would say Grand Blue, or Extra Olympius Klykos, both comedies, for obscure animes I recommend the shows that are about 5 minutes long per episode, you’ll get a good amount of jokes

Grand Blue (one of my favourites) is totally a hit overseas, but the second definitely is not popular (I love the OP and the endings). For shorts, any one in special, maybe Rail Romanesque? :wooow:

^ reminds me of Striking Girl Sayuri if it had less drugs.

Striking Girl Sayuri. Worst anime and also the shortest one ( 3 min ).

Whoever made it probably borrowed a voice-only from his collection AV.

Second: Æon_Flux. America's Anime. ( EDIT: not french )

You cannot trust the internet these days, 20K is probably voted by bots.

What's your favorite obscure anime? Mine's, Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi.
Witch Craft Works and The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess are both really funny but the former never results in deep darkness for any of the characters (and side characters) so I can still enjoy it

Hitori Bocchi’s Empty Life and Bocchi The Rock stylize interactions masterfully but the former never results in tragedy for the sake of a joke (not just that guy at the bar but even the drunk lady) so I can still enjoy it

Ningen Fushin and Re:Zero follow up on the “good guys” and the “bad guys” but the former keeps one stable chronology… but it didn’t complete its story… and the animation was under budget… actually I guess I like the story more than its anime… favorite obscure anime is Hensuki final answer… unless Beast Tamer is more obscure… unless obscure is different based on regions of English speaking places versus Japan and China and Korea 🤔 okay final answer is

Woke up with indigestion, saw this thread pop up, and for some reason immediately thought of Battle Programmer Shirase. IIRC, it was the first work I saw acknowledge the western audience watching via pirated fansubs, during one of its fourth wall breaks.

Variable Fighter GEO was my old anime ever since I got recognition.

Mazinger Z does not count because I can barely count to 10 back then ( but I was slapping panties 'n flippin' skirts like Happosai ). Awww aren't toddlers cute?

I am glad you did not go to reddit. Site name should have been retard.net. Plus they use a plushie icon to attract kids.

oyasumi punpun is probably the author's work about his dead friend. He probably wanted to write a biography but turning punpun into a meme made it more hilarious. EVEN IN THE PLACES WHERE WE MUST BE CRYING.
