Wikipedia says they come from Lovecraft and later the movie The Blob and D&D, though it was definitely Dragon Quest that popularized them. But remember this series and All Saints Street take place in the same universe and all sorts of mythical beings from many different cultures exist here.
If we were sticking with Chinese mythology maybe they could be slime mold jings though
