I equate it to liking their personality traits while not liking what they do (or the personality traits that directly lead to what they do) - Esdeath, for example. She's a stone cold badass with a soft side, which is fine on its own, but then she's also a psychopathic freak; we choose to focus on the good aspects rather than the bad because they're a fictional character and we're making our own headcanon of how cool they would be without the ick
