Give it a try. A very good (but not great enough to be popular) supernatural anime about coming of age and social acceptance. Distinctive art style, nice sfx and OST (a bit repetitive however). Unpretentious, but perhaps too conservative / cliched. You're awesome enough to read this manga, why not be even more awesome and watch something like Zettai Shounen?

Conservative is not exactly the word I'd use to describe it: it's a bit weird, like a kid-friendly Twin Peaks.
It was written by Kazunori Ito, the same screenwriter for Ghost in the Shell, Patlabor and the most of Mamoru Oshii's best works.
Director was the very underrated Tomomi Mochizuki (Ocean Waves, House of Five Leaves, YKK-Quiet Country Cafè)

(but not great enough to be popular)
I don't agree, a lot of great shows never reached the masses despite their quality.
