I've never really understood the mechanics of that whole taking a slap for someone thing. I'm not sure how one could move in front of a slap done at regular slapping speed. Also, unless they replace the person that's about to be slapped by standing in the exact same position, wouldn't they get hit by the wrist or something instead of the hand? Plus, I think in this case, the senpai is behind that kid as he's about to slap, so short of teleporting, I'm not sure how that'd work.

That's not necessarily relevant advice when dealing with bullies. Just fighting back, even if you initially get your ass kicked, can be enough to make the bullies find an easier target. Bullies love easy victims that don't resist, after all. Aside from the psychopathic ones.

defending yourself is different than picking a fight
defense is easier, you can always run, report, hide, put up a fight, resist, etc.
Picking a fight you can't win is different, it's like taunting someone who has a gun and thinking the person won't do anything because shooting you would be illegal.
if you pick a fight against someone obviously stronger than you and rely on some abstract concept to protect your integrity (sex difference, age, laws, norms, honor...) it is considered to be a unintelligent move.
