@Ryuuji_Gremory Actually, you are already biased toward the second prince, as everything you said could be construed as the result of the second prince's propaganda. I am only saying that we (and the MC) aren't provided enough details to make an informed decision in the political environment, and the MC is already decidedly pledging his support behind one side. Don't forget, the MC is throwing his weight behind the second prince faction by only what the supporters of the second prince faction is telling them, in a way that its no different if the first prince faction come to him and told him how the second prince usurped the throne, being the second son, and have the MC join them in dethroning the second prince.

Just to break down some of your misunderstandings,

1. Why are you convinced that the members of the first prince faction are incompetent? Simply because that dickwad of a father was a member of the faction? If anything, the first prince's faction is the underdog, as the second princes' faction is likely larger and more powerful to ensure the second prince was the one who won the previous succession battle. We aren't simply told HOW the second prince won, and whether there was any underhanded actions involved, we simply assumed he was good because the second prince looked more charming than the first prince in the artwork.

2. By extension, why are you assuming the first prince's son will be incompetent and the second prince's son will be good? Because the second prince won the succession dispute of their generation?

3. They didn't invite any enemies, they hired mercenaries to fight against troops loyal to the second prince's faction. Don't forget, the second prince is the current king, his underlings controls the army, if the first prince want to have any change of winning a future for his son, he will have to either convince members of the second prince's faction to switch sides or hire mercenaries.

4. Once again, he is not "protecting the country", he is helping one branch of the royal family plot against another branch of the royal family in a succession dispute, with the only obvious reason of him joining the faction being that one faction has a guy he likes and another faction has a guy he hates. He was neither told nor understand which faction (if any) will be better for the country's future.

Don't forget, once everything settles, if the son of the second prince doesn't die, that son of the first prince will be the one who end up dead just so that the son of the second prince could seize power. Welcome to medieval politics.

@Huapollon Personally I don't trust a series like this to make a side that 'isn't actually bad' have ugly, evil looking, mercenaries like the guys chasing this baby, but fundamentally you're totally right about all those biases and such.

I stand by the fact the other side will absolutely all be evil bastards genuinely, but with more nuanced writing it wouldn't be that way inherently.

Though I'd love to be wrong and later it does turn out this side the MC pledged to is the worse faction by some metric or another that makes the MC regret the choice.

@Huapollon protecting the kingdom in medieval times was almost the same as protecting the king and his heir.
If you last statement was true, it was easier to kill the first prince to begin with or kill his son before he grew up or simply making for the first prince to have any son at all.
Killing babies is always bad, so it's quite an easy choice for our mc to do.

That elf's crotch is half-exposed. The "it looks like she's not wearing any" thing works better when it's not blatantly true.

@Huapollon

The MC doesn't know the King or the first prince but he knows how the supporters of both sides, on the side of the King he has only met decent people, on the other hand the leader of the faction under the first prince is his dickhead of a father, the thing furthest form a decent human being, any sane and decent person would choose the former over the latter. There wont be any twist about how his father was actually a good and kind person that only thinks of the best of the people all along.

1. That dickwad father isn't just a member, he is the leader of the first princes faction, having that lowly piece of shit being the leader of your faction doesn't inspire any trust in you not being a dickhead yourself.

2. That's not what I am saying, but the chances are high that a environment filled with shitty people will raise a child into a shitty person while being surrounded by decent and competent people has a higher chance of raising a child into a decent person. Also it's not like the son is the only one that would gain power by him becoming the next King, in the first place why do you think the son will be the one to actually call the shots as long as his father and the faction surrounding him is still alive ?

3. That would be an argument if they the whole reason they are doing this wasn't to murder a child, it's a fact that they are the ones starting a civil war to murder a child and seize power. Also you can call them mercs if you want but "The savages of the south" clearly are either a band of criminals or a straight up enemy of the Kingdom, inviting them into the Royal capital endangers everyone who lives there.

4.That's just plain false, he isn't helping them to plot against the other branch he is helping them to escape the plot of the other branch. They are the ones being attacked not the ones attacking.

5. Also you are clearly just assuming that the son of the first prince would be killed, the current situation shows clearly that there is no need for that, if there was any need the first prince wouldn't be alive right now because according to your logic he would have to be killed to just so that the second prince could seize power. Not to mention that the son of the second prince, aka the King, doesn't need to "seize power" he is the first born son of the king, he is first in line to the throne and will become king without any need to seize the throne.

hhmmmm....

sorry if I'm a simpleton but all these talks about the factions don't bother me too much, for a couple of reasons:

1)every country in the world has in its history the proof that "humanity" has often shown its worst, and treason and murder are part of it.[takes a random history book and you will certainly find examples of coups, political assassinations, or other deplorable acts].
this is to say << the scenario is plausible >>

2)the MC's father, is he an idiot? YES!
does he only think of personal power and prestige? YES (just reread how the "useless" child treats for every purpose, the MC)

3)the solutions to power disputes are relatively simple:
a)bargain for the side in power now (so save the kid)
b)bargain for the rioters (take out the child and his family members)
...
c)be a third faction and maybe eliminate all of them, beautiful, ugly, tall, low, fat, thin
.... and pokemon = _ =
