What confuses me is why she's not trying to escape or fight back against her captor. I assume there's a reason, I just can't picture it. Maybe she's afraid of becoming a criminal, or feels some obligation to him for taking her off the street, or thinks if she leaves she'll end up on the street again.

Well I would assume it could be a fear towards him. As a kid he threatened to make her do sex work if she tried running again. That fear is still in her, and probably more so as an adult since he clearly has dangerous connections that could track her down.

Hopefully she gains some courage and tells her troubles to MC since she is also powerful in the mafia world.
