Man, the Catholic Church and the idea of "purity" is a crazy history. Priests had to have no relations so the church could get their things on death. Before the printing press, monks often were the ones copying books, and they were anything but "pure." More like a frat house.
They doodled in the books, which created some of the symbols used today, like the "jesus fish" which was just monks drawing women's genitals. The "child song" Pop Goes the Weasel? That was made by a monk, and the weasel represents a dick.
