I'm really not sure I understand what making a toy, has to do with proving flight is possible ? Like it's a toy... I could make a paper plane, it wouldn't prove I can make a boeing fly.

It would be better to make a glider first, it's much simpler then make the propeller attached to the glider then build the plane. it's like starting with the small stuff first, they are making a plane already even if it is a toy plane.

i agree that making a model that glides would be easier. but if they only make gliding toys, i feel like the jerks would still mock them. they need to make a model that can actually take off and fly by itself to shut the jerks up.

but i also admit that i still have no idea how they would make any "machine" to make the model flies for real. we'll see

The basic mechanics of flight aren't that hard at all. Just generate enough upward force (lift) to counteract the weight of the object.

If they succeed at generating sufficient lift on a smaller model, they will have grounds to increase the size. If they will increase the size too much and it won't fly, they'll know that the failure is due to the weight, not method. They can then try to lower the weight, or modify the method using it as a baseline, to find a more effective configuration.

That being said, making something incapable of flight (wood and cloth) to move upwards on its own is more than enough proof that flight is possible. Sure, it's just a toy. But if you saw a rock floating on top of the water, wouldn't you believe that it's possible to make a ship out of rock? (Hint, it is...though not necessarily every rock and/or not necessarily without some tricks.) Same is true here.

ash talks about aluminum alloys as if they aren't metals lol
I thought so too, at first, but then realized he specifically mentioned iron - presumably the best metal they currently have for what they're trying to do, but still inadequate for their present needs (especially with the state of metallurgy being what it is).

Also, while a quick search didn't seem to bring up any working airplanes made of plain iron, I did find this - the first all-metal airplane (according to the article), which was apparently made of steel.

Yes, you can, because you live in modern era and already had someone else who flew by using paper and wood before. But, imagine you're living in that era where most people thinking 'anything other than bird cannot fly', did you ever think the idea to create paper plane ever come?

That's why a model is needed to grasp the theory they had and do some more trial and error. Once the theory is established, all they need to do is upscale it.

My only worry is how they're going to tackle the complicated calculation they needed to make the plane take off, flying, gliding, and landing. I'm not a physic expert, but I'm aware how complicated the calculation is.

But they aren't making a paper plane. They're making a miniature model of an aircraft capable of flight. If the toy could fly with an equivalent weight of passengers, then making a bigger one would be more than likely to carry people.

This way, they are able to iterate on the design with minimal material cost. The cloth and wood would be the materials used for the larger aircraft.

They said toy, but I think that's more a mistranslation, I think model would have been a more proper word and better matches the author's intent.

So many people quoting my post. :D
I don't disagree with most of what you guys are saying, however, they do say "toy", so... It implies there's no engine, nothing aside from basically a wooden plane you have to throw and which might glide a bit.
The first plane that shows flight was in fact possible, was big enough for people to fit in, and had a bike has an "engine". Nowhere near "toy" levels.

I think they may be making a glider type thing. Or, not sure if they mentioned it, they may use rubber for the engine. If the model is small. Or even a pedal…not sure if that’d work.

No idea, do they have rubber though ? It's one thing to get it from a tree, it's another to properly make a band from it. Then again, this manga hasn't been the most bothered by realism so far. :D

in that specific instance Ash said 玩具/おもちゃ/toy, I thought about using the word model or miniature but in context he's not going into much detail when speaking to Quid, who assumes he's making something like a boomerang; so I stuck w/ the literal interpretation
