Oh my god. This whole chapter. It's just so human...Isabella is at her best when she reaches out to other people and shows the full force of her empathy. And the revelation at the end of the chapter! This is all so good. As always, thank you for your work!

Also, you can actually make out some of the English words in Isabella's speech as Ito translates for her. It doesn't seem to be fully fluent English, but some of the words do reflect what Ito is saying for her.

Ms. Bird is engaged? I felt cheated. I was shipping her with Ito the whole time... we haven't sailed yet. <//3

Historical Spoiler
And it's going to be her canon fate.
I mean, just google her Wikipedia entry, which is called Isabella Bishop in german.
Ito isn't even mentioned on any of them

@panzerkampfwagyu I see. What a pity for the ship but it makes sense and this story has never been one for showing simple happy endings but the multi-facets of different lives.

That ending spoiled the chapter a bit for me. I mean, what a change in mood lol.
Maybe it's just the manga, but that grave was incredible shallow. Wouldn't the place smell bad after some time?

Those were the days my friend..

The Catacombs in Paris are filled with bones of the deceased- because the graveyards were so filled with corpses that they became like swamps from all the juices of the dead and needed to be cleared out, or so it is said.
So compare that thought with the mentioned idea of having to throw away the shoes after having buried a corpse and it might be just because of all the shallow burials and what might be seeping out from half-rotten coffins or shallow graves.

Also, the end notes implied that in Japan the coffin would be filled with stuff that would also act to absorb smells and moisture. The coffin itself is probably just there so dogs don't come digging up the corpse for its meaty bits before the worms get to them.

Thanks for the chapter!
@Toriaezu I really appreciate the notes at the end of the chapter. Superb translation and commitment work.
I also like it when you give your personal opinion about some aspect of the plot.

I only discovered this manga a few days ago (thank you @Toriaezu for providing the Otoyomegatari's bonus) and what a pleasure reading is!
I am in love with the notes at the end of each chapter, for the depth of your research.
And I hope that you enjoy doing so and will be able to continue.

damn, I'm disappointed not because I shipped her with Ito but just because I assumed she'd be a single, kickass explorer lady until the day she died T-T
