Also, there’s the monologue where he truly believed in her until something changed. Why does it seem like it was something surprising or major considering their friendship started from a dare and he knew, in the first place?

even though their friendship was started as dare, it became genuine later and mc did not want to lose her his friend. But that confession changed everything for him as they become estranged after that.
