Roma volunteering himself as a hostage really changes things, and he really screwed up negotiations almost to the point of open conflict between both sides.

He may have good intentions, but he's also dangerously naive and exactly the kind of guy who'd get himself used, betrayed and thrown away. Like they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. I don't get why some people still call Lerunda naive just because she's willing to hear him out and talk; Just hearing out someone is not the same as agreeing, and it's normal to want to seek out the other side of a story. It's not her but Roma who is naive, because unlike her he acts before he thinks, being driven solely by his emotions.

The others are right, if he firmly chooses to act on his own then it's for the best that they let him go over to the other side for good, since he empathizes so much for the refugees but shows none for his own people. The elders' attempt to convince him is his second and last chance and honestly they're already being too soft on him for endangering them all.
