I did track in middle school and they indeed look like that. Loose, thin, and floppy but very unrestricted so you can get your legs up. The shoes are a bit off though. They literally are like porcupine spikes on the front end iirc. Extremely uncomfortable but basically impossible to slip

Well first off he's not that far in life lol, but the TL doesn't entirely convey what he was trying to say there. He originally says これ靴擦れってやつかな..., and 靴擦れ is a blister but specifically one caused by friction with your shoe. So the line in an ideal world would read as something like "Wow, guess that's a 'shoe rub blister'..." but there's no such word in English so our TL had to go for simple old blister.
