My suspension of disbelief couldn't handle the idea that An could speak perfect english just learning from school. There's just no way

I didn't interpret it as perfect English but just good enough basic English for a simple conversation. Which is an achievement for a Japanese school kid, yes, but not impossible. We don't really know all about her circumstances, but we do know she goes to a higher level school in a bigger town. So, it's quite possible she actually puts in a whole lot of effort in studying and something in her family also has made her do it. Maybe some kind of English language contact also exist for her. Like one of her parents is fluent in English and has made sure the daughter's only English source isn't the typical Japanese school experience, which isn't that great, based on everything I've seen over the years.

The realistic thing here is the fact that, without consideration, an American tourist assumes locals in a non-english foreign country can speak English and understand it just as well.

My friend's uncle traveled all over Europe speaking neither English nor any language they speak in continental Europe, and also typically drunk on the cheapest booze each country could offer. I don't even know how he booked the tickets.
