If the tourist hadn't mentioned AI, I would have forgotten that this story was set in the present. I'd have thought it was set in the 2000s or 2010s, given the serene atmosphere and pristine rural setting. There might have been beetles or fireflies, too.
I mean, the countryside doesn't exactly change much with the times lol
It's pretty much always going to be peaceful and pristine. Until the decreasing birth rate and people moving to bigger cities inevitably turns it into a ghost town, at least...

Everybody taking about how dumb An is, and how is creepy that she would hang out with this foreign adult, is failing to consider that this American dude is actually super cool! :boomer:

Shunpei did a good job there, it was really careless of An to just leave with the tourist, I mean that’s literally how you get kidnapped bro, well done protecting your gf shunpei

I heard Japanese law enforcement is not to be trifled with. If you mess up and get caught, they put you in prison, and might as well keep you there until your Visa expires and then boot you back to where you came from.

They kinda failed with that asshat nuisance streamer. At least Korea kinda didn't fail from what I remember.

Incidentally, to everyone mocking the foreigner to "taking a picture of the Japanese kids" in this chapter, the Japanese film "The Village Album" (2004) is a story where they take photos of all the families living in the fictional village of Hanatani in order to preserve their history and love for their town. I'm unsurprised most English readers would never have gotten that reference, but it's not meant to be seen as anything "perverted" or "spiteful." It's intentially referential.

People be hating on An for her lack of danger when she grew up in rural japan
I aint an expert but im pretty sure she's living in a peaceful high trust environment with no real reason not to trust others
She's got a lot of academic smarts but asking someone who lived in such an enclosed environment is bound to lack street smarts of the outside world
Luckily Shunpei actually does have some sense of stranger danger
Even more luckier it turned out to just be a nice if anything oblivious dude
Hopefully if she does ever plan to go out and travel outside her hometown, she properly equips herself with the dangers she could face
