Eeeh, I gotta say - some hentai/ecchi mangakas can make the transition from the thin books to full serialization with decent writing. Zurikishi (sachou to sake to hoshi) and Zyugoya (batsunaki) totally did, and Medatarou (FPS de Shoshinsha) pulled it off to a certain extent, but Kazuma (Inaka no Kuro Gal…which is pretty much hentai)? Oh boy - really need to work on the storytelling elements.

Really appreciate the effort from @RonBWL. BTW, did you drop Henjo?
Wait till you found out that:
  • Masamune Shirow (Appleseed, GITS) still draws hentai artbooks
  • Butcha-U’s drawing for a non-hentai manga
  • Coolkyousinnjya also does hentai
  • Amahara is a hentai artist too, with a very distinctive artstyle (like crayon shin-chan, but better IMO)
  • Jouji Manabe does hentai.

Would almost say "started to draw"? The oldest art books are pretty tame, with mostly some pinups a few risque images, and most of the pieces collections are also not explicit at all.

But by now he's working on w-tails cat and galgrease and it's straight up hentai.

IIRC he did have several very explicit artworks back then, in the ye olde days of the pre-21st millenia?

Hmm, I’ll need to look around, I can’t remember any… One or two explicits per book, but not mostly explicit…

He’s potentially my favorite artist, and I have a lot of his art books, along with almost every manga he’s put out, as physical books, big fan.

Did Nanashi put out anything after Nagatoro? You can totally see the same teasing and edging dynamic from Nagatoro in his earlier hentai works - he’s genuinely good at those kinda stories, but either he decided to quit (burnt out?) or he haven’t had much luck pitching serialization ideas afterwards. I kinda wish he expanded more on the schoolboy-and-yokai fox chick storyline that he ran on pixiv.

Another good example of a hentai mangaka making a successful jump would be Nori5rou - Imaizumi/slutzumi managed to be entertaining even as a ridiculous harem romcom involving the same exact characters as the hentai version.

Masamune Shirow? Oh, he did some explicit stuff. The original Ghost In the Shell manga fron had a yuri 3-some scene right at the beginning of chapter 3 that was removed in the original 1997 Dark Horse print, restored in the 2004 re-release and censored in the later Kodansha re-prints - to be honest, that scene had no relevance to the story whatsoever (other than getting Batou queasy). From what I remember GITS2: Man Machine interface had some explicit content in certain Japanese editions as well. Although Masamune Shirow didn’t start out in his career as a hentai artist and transition into regular manga - he has always done fanbox-like artwork during the Appleseed era of the 1980s.

Eh, Masamune Shirow did artbooks since the 1980s - it’s just that his perviness factor got higher over time, and he’s not known as being a hentai mangaka who went mainstream.

Butcha-U is an illustrator for the Isekai manga “might as well cheat”, although isekai mangas are a dime a dozen these days, and other hentai mangakas are known to draw for them as well - Danimaru also did a cute isekai manga involving a cat god (placed into hiatus and silently killed off) - but in those cases the mangaka is adapting a story from a light novel author. There’s a certain skillset needed to write both good hentai (tend to be mostly one-shots), and good serialized original manga - a storyline in hentai is often just a 3 page convoluted excuse to get nasty, while a serialized manga requires engaging characters, plot, pacing, etc. The irony here is that Danimaru is pretty good at the hentai plotlines (although it’s almost always a dominant gal type and a guy who is more then happy and willing to go along) - considerIng that it is essentially how Uzaki-chan wa Asobitai plays out, you figure that he’ll have more success with mainstream serialization. Nope! Either he likes hentai stardom or isekei mangas pay better.

Coolkyousinnjya (Kobayashi Dragon maid) definitely did hentai, and the hentai was done while he was serialized as a normal manga artist, so I have no idea if he got famous doing hentai while in a doujinshi circle and transitioned into mainstream manga, or he’s a mainstream mangaka delving into hentai as a side gig. The same can probably be said about Amahara.

Jouji Manabe (of Outlander/Rin x Mama fame) doing hentai? I don’t think any of his work is explicit per-se - it’ll go into the “erotica” category rather than “mature”. His output can be lewd but it’ll probably be around the same level of lewdness as say…Nikumaru (Bad Girl/Someone’s Girlfriend).

I know he did the occasional explicit illustration, my point was more that in later years he’s gone all out with it. =)

That’s basically like a managaka drifting occasionally back to hentai circles, but instead of a thin book or 2 at Comiket, it’s a fancy artbook version of that (not that I am hating on it, it’s just too expensive to buy and too explicit to be a good coffee table art book).

My point is that mangaka who got their fame from hentai don’t usually transition well to mainstream manga-dom, but there are ones that dabble successfully in both.

Oh sure, fwiw my original comment about Shirow was aimed at what Wolvenworks said, unrelated to your original comment. =)
