The most trite and unfunny kind of gag you can make in a Japanese piece of media, and now let's make it be the whole damn chapter

I mean sure this being a translation means we're getting exposure to this "joke" second hand, and the translator basically has to explain what the joke is (in closed captions), but I can't imagine the comedy of misunderstandings being all that funny even in the original language
I do not like the misunderstandings trope much either, though I do think it was funny when we found out what the wife's personality is really like when she got focus for a few chapters.

I also did enjoy the first few parts of this chapter when the wife actually figured it all out "I AM A GENIUS!" followed by the avalanche of overthinking it and fooling herself again "OH NO!" so I do think the trope was a bit more well done than usual on the wife's part.

Honestly I'm still more dismayed that Ayase turned out to be a virginial, shy, "i've never felt this way!" type of maiden instead of the psycho domineering stalker that she seemed to be.

Could have been a fun series with her being a yandere-ish Light Yagami trying to mislead the wife and get the husband to bulk up while slowly implanting the idea of leaving his family - while the wife is a blundering L that is always just on the cusp of finding the culprit while slowly starting to treat her husband better and noticing that he's been improving himself lately.

That's all I can say, this chapter left me speechless XD holy moly the MC is a poor dude stuck between someone as dense as a black hole and the other as hard as a rock.

Very good TL! Thanks for it! The typesetting was also very good too. Keep at it if you feel up to it, but even if not your work is appreciated.

I hate this chapter. This isn't misunderstanding. It's bad writing.

Unless there are some nuances to the Japanese language that we are losing in translation, then this is the dumbest and most infuriating chapters so far.

From what I have gleaned over time -

Japanese as a language relies a fair bit on context in how it's grammatically structured, because certain aspects of grammar that you would find in languages like English don't exist.

If I am correct - then terms like "performance" on p.6 are being referred to by both Ayase and Kaori in different contexts, but neither are outright stating those, simply assuming that their particular version is the correct one for the conversation. Because it's inferred and not outright stated--due to how Japanese works grammatically, it's literally absent unless specifically worked into the dialogue by further clarification on the speaker's part--the misunderstanding arises.

I only know enough to know that I need to read & study a lot more to get a true grasp of it, but effectively it is lost in translation, as far as the specific nuance at play--which is why the TL put those specific words in parentheses--those are for English speakers to see what inference is being left out of the actual dialogue between them, so that the joke still lands because translated (more) literally, it wouldn't be as clear that Ayase & Kaori are using the same terms, but speaking to wildly different contextual subject matter.

Someone once told me it's akin to a form of linguistic word play, but happening entirely "accidentally", and is a result of how Japanese as a language is structured, rather than a purposeful effort on the part of the speakers to obfuscate their intent. It's not 1:1, but assuming they were correct, it gets the idea across, for me at least.

Kinda like the "Who's On First" Skit, I guess.

The question from there is whether the reader (Japanese, English-speaking, or otherwise) finds it funny, but that's what I assume the mechanics at play consist of, at least.

I had suspected that the cousin and FMC would be getting together in this story in some way, since he liked her, though whether or not it ends up like that is yet to be seen.

I'm a bit annoyed that the wife has yet to really confront or reconcile that she was being negligent of her husband until now - that's the development I'm most interested in seeing.

This would have a backing track of a piano that softly plays the main theme except it suddenly stops at some points based on what a character said or might have implied
