@Arcara I dunno about the mid to lower tier peppers on the Scoville scale, but the ones all vying for the title of hottest pepper in the world are very recent very specially made in a lab variants. The Carolina Reapers were probably already at the point where it's more of a test of courage than a food item, but at least three other peppers were still waiting for official testing and such the last I heard. People are just trying to make weapons again at this point.

@Glomoro arms races have always been popular pastimes for people with any kind of free time, just a matter of time before it goes nuclear, and some authority putting regulations.

@ZeroWWE yes and no for the beastmen yes for humans no for elf idk. And the history of tomato being poisonous is because people were eating it with lead utensils well it’s unknown what kind of utensils they use in this place so that might be just flavor text.

@greatninja3 I mean tomatoes are related to poisonous things, nightshade n all that ya know? So in this universe maybe they just have a bit more in common.

@BlackHoleEyes "The French and northern Europeans erroneously thought them to be poisonous because they are a member of the deadly nightshade family. This was exacerbated by the interaction of the tomato's acidic juice with pewter plates. The leaves and immature fruit contains tomatine, which in large quantities would be toxic." - Wikipedia.
Maybe it's the same case in this world.

@Wolvenworks
@bingel919 is right
@BlackHoleEyes you too are not far from the truth
many things that we eat every day was bad for the body
what has changed is for certain the way of cooking, the time to harvest it, or simply the time to adapt
in Europe it is normal to drink milk and most people support it well, but in Asia people are alergic, the same for alcohol
the very spicy food is very poorly supported in the regions that did not historically use spices as strongly

@Gauvain to clarify we asians are not allergic to milk. that would be ridiculous. most of us are just not as lactose tolerant as europeans but most ppl have at one point drunk milk before. at least in my country (indonesia). i don't think lactose intolerance is an allergy since it's more of a biological lack of ability to process it instead of the body just reacting to it badly. same with alcohol: some ppl are just not good with booze but "allergy" implies that if i have my occasional can of Guinness i'd have an actual high risk to die from it (which is outright ridiculous). i'd imagine japan would be severely depopulated since they have a habit of drinking after work...(as some mangas can attest)

@Wolvenworks
do not take what I say at the word, English is far from my native language, I took the first word that came to my mind
and intolerance is the right word
short in my country there is only 17% of the population who is lactose intolerant in East Asia it's between 90% and 100%

for alcohol it's yet another thing, 50% of the Asian population does not have the enzyme needed to turn alcohol into something less dangerous to the body
