Seems like he's more than just the robe. He's got glowing eyes, and the panel showing his magic core suggests the robe is wrapped around a three-dimensional body. I don't know if his actual body is invisible, or looks like it's made of living shadow, so maybe the robe is regular clothing, maybe it's skin, or maybe it's more like a containment suit?
