honestly what a ride, i remember starting this series when i was 20 something. i don’t know how author managed to do only 143 chapters over the course of 10 years.
Not every series is a Shounen Jump weekly serial, lol. Try doing the math for a monthly series and you'll quickly realize Gate has had a pretty reasonable amount of chapters for the period it ran.
Tyuule's death is so ridiculously forced and I fucking hate it. There was literally 0 reason for her to drag out her revenge so long, or to get off that helicopter, or to just suddenly let her guard down for that split second while he was bleeding out (she's not naíve enough to think he wouldn't be able to fight back with an injury like that!). It's tragic for all the wrong reasons.
not like they need 'lie down' with only "sleeping close to, in the same room", what as Leilei stated before se accomplished, and discarded Tuka´s argument only cause she accomplished the 'three nights' rule before Leilei could..
aside im curious about what will manga version will make in future: end of publishing after they reach light novel epilogue, or make an original arc to wave with novel "2nd season"
This was the first manga I went looking for after I saw the anime. THIS was the story that brought me to MangaDex. This is the one got me into manga and I kept coming back for more of it AND more of new stories. I learned the tropes of (and the perils of!) Japanese manga. I am glad the art style stayed, the characters grew, fell, rose back up and got the story to a place that opens up more adventures. Little bit sad it reach the end and yes it could have had a few more chapters to firm up the conclusion. Lil too many panty shots, lil too many waifus cut down, and heavy on the nobility of the JSDF over every other faction... yet still a great manga to me. This one was one of my all time favorites since 2016!
I do hope there is some more of this story, I really hope there will be more of these characters, still wishing for that elusive third season anime! Thanks for the ride that brought me here and Thank you MangaDex.
Interestingly, this kinda off mention but it involves the LN of it's sequel.
From the pov of the 2nd season MC, Tokushima, he remembers the story his JGSDF colleague talk about, how when the JGSDF & JASDF got stranded in Special Region, they decided to build an oil refinery to replenish their fuel supply, but afterward Rory destroyed it, which makes the MC ponder that they can bring their technologies FROM THEIR WORLD, but not in Special Region which imply it would cause disturbance to the Special Region's order (Remember the role of Demigods/Apostles that Rory told?)
Damn I knew from spoilers that Tyuule was going to die but I was really hoping that they would change her fate here, sure she was evil but if it wasn't for the JSDF, there would never have been change without someone ready to backstab. And dang, this really read like a final chapter. It's hard to imagine seeing this series end after such a long time even if it has some sort of sequel apparently with the Navy.
Idk what is going on but from what I got it's, Empire ask Japan for help attack Zorzal>Battle>Behind the gate there is riot>idk what is going on>Attack to Pina father place>Everyone death>Monster appear>Behind the gate monster appear. Everything is making me confusing
Season 2 has nothing to do with season 1 though. Completely new characters with a completely different branch of the military in a completely new area.
JSDF withdrew back thru the gate. Then the gate closed. Then they tried to open the gate again, and it connected to random worlds with bugs and what not ? Sp they used an anchor (that she wouldn't tell what it was) of this world to connect to it successfully instead of trying randomly over and over ? And now the gate is closed again.
Itami himself. It took Leilei sometimes to connect Itami's passion for otaku culture in Japan to realign the gate to our world. This was revealed in epilogue. Basically ended where the series started. Itami come back for Comike.
Many years ago, I watched GATE S1 and S2 and was thrilled to learn there was a manga adaptation that continues the story.
It was quite rough around the ages at first, and oh the horrible low-res scanlations, anybody remember those? Fun times.
But shortly after the events of S2 (anime), the manga started to... Decline. Or as discussed many times here, it's probably the original WN/LN that did.
The author clearly had no idea what to do, so he started dropping filler-like episodes and then pointless harem ones, making the readers (at least in the West) quite annoyed. Among other things, he thrashed Rory-Itami's relationship importance for no reason other than to fill the magazine chapters.
But then the plot really took a turn for the worse and became an almost direct shitposting by the author against the Chinese (he's a (retired?) JSDF soldier, as a reminder). That was when the manga dropped from "eh" to "wtf is this retarded shit, author?"
Even people not in love with China noted how forced and silly the "plot" was.
And the last arc was this... Classic dumb, rushed ending where everything goes FUBAR for absolutely no believable reason, and the abandonment of all the unresolved setting mysteries is the traditional icing on top.
GATE reminds me of SnK/AOT a lot. A very strong series that peaked towards the middle, but instead of dying a hero, it devolved into a "wtf is shit BS, author-san" to the point where people met its end with "fucking finally, as shitty as I expected".
I want to thank everybody in the comments for making reading this series over the many years a very fun experience. The memes and silly discussions were the best and especially towards the end they carried the series where the author couldn't.
