It would have been more interesting, if for once he got the wrong guy, tortured him, killed him, then realized later on that he was innocent. To add more realism, a scene where he gets a "confession" out of him under torture could have been also introduced, which would have further emphasized the issues with playing vigilante.

@criver that can still happen and would probably be more interesting. think about it, this is his first time being a vigilante and he feels 100% justified in what he's about to do to that shithead. it could easily set him on the path where he continues to feel justified in his vigilantism and then he'd get the wrong guy, or, worse yet, a case of a false accusation. It'd be more interesting imo to see how a more seasoned vigilante version of him would react to being pretty much no different from the guy he's about to attack

I don't think it will, the manga seems to "stay away" from complicated topics such as this (I am not implying that this is not tackling difficult topics as it is - it just could have gone into various aspects and povs to further enrich the story). Just to clarify - I do not imply that this should necessarily happen on his first kill (even though there are some interesting ideas that can be developed only then).

As far as I can remember in the prequel (which is chronologically a sequel), he never made such a "mistake".

I fully agree - after he has lived his whole life for handing out "justice", having it questioned - effectively "denying" what he has been doing and his existence as a whole, is also a very interesting route to take.
