I fail to see how this skill is "useless".
Even if it doesn't boost you combat ability by itself it could still be used in a battlefield.
Shit, even if it didn't tame monsters you could tame and use birds to distract your opponents, tame a wolf or even a tiger and have them fight with you.
I feel like the ppl of that world are not very creative.
