I'm old enough to remember the hysteria created by Anna Anderson who claimed to be the survived Anastasia. It was MASSIVE. There have been many movies, books, and plays written just on her testimony. In this alt history where she actually did escape, it would be even bigger.

i mean, its cool enough to be the talking topic sure, but imo that wouldnt necessarily mean some politicians and oligarchs would wanna put her on the throne. even more so the general public after going through soviet antagonization of imperial russia in education. why would they? i dont understand.
It's partially mitigated if Runa only makes big purchases for stuff in japan, right? If, say, she buys an entire nuclear power plant, doing it in USD doesn't change it being a massive investment back into japan.
Runa need to avoid taxes when bringing that money back to Japan.
That’s why she planned on using multinational banks (such as “lending” money from Japanese branch in Yen, and pay it to the US branch in Dollar); and her recruiting that trader to start oil investment and use oil as intermediary between the currency. She wants to avoid being so obviously transferring her massive wealth out of America to Japan. Both governments would want a massive tax cut from it.
The issue is, the money ISN'T in Japan. It's scattered all around, but a large amount of it is in America, and vast majority in USD.
But they don't know that yet. That's the real danger. The moment they fully grasp what she's doing/done, they can regulate her out of business, or cut her off from her bank accounts and give her no choice but to flee the country.
Secrecy is of utmost importance to Runa. Nobody knows where that money has come from. It came from an estate legally owned by her biological family in Japan, not by Runa herself who is still a minor. There's a very real threat of her family outright stealing all her money.
And that's exactly what's happening on her Russian side. They (falsely) believe she still possesses the Romanov fortune. But-
The Russian Government simply want the money back, as in they want the rest of the Romanov assets they stole. However, there are also aristocratic loyalists who want to put Runa on the vacant Russian throne. That missing fortune represents her legitimacy. Those loyalists run deep on all sides.
Runa desperately needs political (politician) allies. And that's going to mean making some very ugly decisions.
That's why she called it a baseless conspiracy. It's not just about money, but politics. People are after her not just for her vast wealth she may or may not have claim over, but also a secret conflict that could be made public to create a social upheaval or political victory.
Would the Romanovs have transferred their fortunes to Switzerland already before the Great War? They wouldn't have even really expected to lose their position (and lives) at that point, would they? During the war it would seem like quite an unlikely event, seeing how back then 0% fortunes were just bits in the cyberspace. They were all physical treasures. If it happened before the war, there would have been a whole lot people who would have noticed.
If Putin doesn't know where the treasures are, then nobody does, that's 100% certain. He might not have them, or most of them, but he would know. Unless Lenin & Stalin killed everyone who knew and made it all disappear.
So she is aware that she is targeted by a government that is infamous for how they deal with ppl, supposedly including stuff like parking outside your place of residence (or renting a nearby tall building) using directed energy weapons on the brain to either kill or mentally cripple them so they are forced to retire from mental degradation? (Yes, that is an unproved conspiracy theory. But one that is honestly not unbelievable, just unlikely.)
Yeah, that is indeed scary. There's not really any way to protect yourself either, without going utterly paranoid and hiding away yourself (and need to do same for capable proxies). And even then they might find other ways to get you~
Probably in the original after Runa went bankrupt, she went to Russia to look for the treasure.
Also, detective probably knows that what Runa is doing is protecting the economy from collapsing, hence why he likely says there is nothing he wants from her, just continue doing what she was doing
The year is still 1998 in this chapter. The Russian president is still Yeltsin.
But at some point in that year, Putin is the director of FSB. So yeah, maybe just maybe he is the one.
I hope this doesn't prevent Runa from doing what she was planning to do. I could see it preventing her from succeeding. Being distracted may not seem like much, but it's a lot especially if she ends up worried about being tapped. Her plans could grind to a halt, and it may even get her into financial trouble.

That doesn't change the tax rate. The percentage stays the same no matter the amount, hence why she's using various strategies to move money around through goods rather than currency. Currency is just taxed that much more.
