In the novel it was explained that her spirit's lotus seeds strengthened your bones, purified your bonemarrow and renewed your tendons and flesh. I can't recall whether the acupuncture and whatnot was as a show but he sweats out the poison due to the seed she fed him. (She had consumed one first to see the effect and benefit from it.)
