I think the point wasn't that she was helping others out, the point was that she never said no and never established personal boundaries. If you always just agree even when you're busy yourself you will burnout sooner or later and probably also neglect the task that you were originally hired to do. Especially when you never ask for help yourself. Such behavior could either be explained by simply not being able to stand up for yourself or seeking validation by trying to be useful for others

And that's why I said company loyalty is a two way street. Natori isn't the only one working.

Yes, Natori should be more assertive and recognize she needs to set boundaries, but everyone in this thread saying Natori needs to stand up for herself is doing the same thing her coworkers are doing: shifting all the responsibility onto her, and by extension if she "fails" to set those boundaries it's entirely her fault.

That being said, you're definitely correct because this is Japanese work culture we're talking about. I don't think her coworkers would be as nice as mine were.

Honestly thought it was gonna be like the fenrir office lady one. Where it cuts back to the company that fired her and the company is crashing and burning cause everyone relied on her too much.

Thanks for the TL

The responsibility IS on her. This isn't some boomer fantasy where your company cares for every individual worker and will stay loyal to each and every one until they retire - we live in times when companies use every opportunity to take advantage and squeeze their temporary cogs for all they're worth. This environment, in turn, influences workers to treat each other in the same way - there is a reason why whenever a post/video/anything (serious or an obvious humorous skit) about someone working their ass off in a department of lazies gets posted, it gets a crowd of people who share their own experiences with toxic work environments.

When the default is shit, it is on the individual to make an effort to remain free of fecal matter, not on their environment.

Unless she was there since the company's founding, her being gone should not affect things catastrophically. It might cause a hiccup from people stumbling due to the small comforts they took for granted being gone, but it will likely find equilibrium with a new batch of "I must please everyone around me uwu" people to bear the brunt of the majority's underperformance.

That's kinda sad.
They could have maybe been friends, they even liked the same game, but she only realized the true depth of Natori after she was already gone.

And holy fucking shit I don't care about short hair ladies 99.9% of the time but sweet Jesus that Lapis 100/10 Lord have mercy.

Holyshit! A clueless free labor wage drone. I'm betting the corpo overlords must be crying right now over Natori's missing.

It's not necessarily her responsibility alone, a good team leader should have realized what was going on and tried to raise awareness. Though from the way her work place is depicted it doesn't seem like interpersonal stuff is valued all that highly and since japanese work culture seems to be very rigid this might generally not be very common there. That being said, communicating clearly is important and that includes telling others off when necessary. Some might struggle with it, or might not even be aware themselves of how bad the situation is but at the end of the day it depends on them saying something. Especially in such a climate where her co-workers might not have the capacity to think about whether everything is alright with her and instead just take her for granted. I'm not trying to blame her, but ignoring the issue isn't helpful either.

I responded to your first comment because you said that her co-workers saw her helping others as a weakness, which isn't necessarily what's going on. And while she's not solely responsible for what was going on, not being able to set your boundaries can definitely be seen as a weakness.
