the owl means that they are allowed to eat it this time since it's the princess' birthday. however, MC probably should have finished hearing his speech 'royals have only cut it for--' because maybe eating it before royals actually cut it could be disrespectful or mean something else like WhiteWhaleJonas' suggestion

@Nk9bjP4A Owl Nobleman was starting to say only the royal family has cut the phoenix egg in (insert time measurement or number of generations) when he wandered off to snag some egg since it was so rare to have a chance to eat it. Probably became an unspoken rule of some kind.

Yeah, he probably wasn't supposed to cut it but considering he ended up having a very natural interaction with the Princess and serving her, she's probably very happy and will ask for him to be forgiven. After all, it's probably been a very long time since she's had a conversation with someone who genuinely didn't know her and just treated her normally
