To this day I'll never understand the bullshit behind their engagement. talk about missing the point, you even answered your own question. Yes they were planning to get together anyway but it was important to them that they had a choice and that they made it themselves I wouldn't call pointless. Also before he did that she herself wasn't sure she even wanted it, him doing the annulling made her realize that she wanted to be with him so another reason it wasn't for nothing.

engagement meant that they will be married in the end no matter what. Thus breaking the engagement was important psychological milestone. From this point onward they are not obliged to be together at all. Which means that them getting married is being entirely out of only these two's volition. Which is the actual purpose of his manoeuvre
