Nikukai might be laboring under the assumption that "jhirav" is actually how "giraffe" is spelled in English - both spellings would be a reasonable way to write out /dʒɪˈɹɑːf/ if you were only familiar with how the word was spoken, after all, and his name in Japanese is written out in katakana (ジラフ), suggesting that it's a foreign word.
