They take real historic formations, alter them somewhat for 3D maneuvering and pretend the battle is fluid, which is should be. BUT they dont react to anything properly. The guy is suppose to be a military genius spouting "we have greater number, we can crush them" and the makes this crescent shape and is like "oh no!".
They have lasers but no way to communicate using it except old fashion spot lights, not even quantum communications. Detections are a joke here too, only using radar and human sight. They briefly said earlier that they have autonomous ships but clearly dont utilize them enough, which makes me think this whole war is a population control scheme.
Just like Star Wars and 40k. it suffers from a severe lack of foresight in where technology was taking it. Star Trek was impressive in their foresight, though they did get quite a few things comically wrong.
