Yes, this weird three-timing relationship is clearly unsustainable. Naoya is just one guy with an insane work ethic, he will literally work himself to death trying to make everyone happy.
The only healthy end to this is an equal polyamorous relationship- Saki is openly bi (even if the manga seems to read that as literally just a joke) and the other two also have gay tendencies. All it would take is one good conversation to sort out like half of this relationship’s problems.
But of course it’s not gonna go that route. In spite of Saki openly simping for Nagisa from the very start, this story has never been gay, and it’s never been about a healthy polycule- it’s about a fundamentally unbalanced harem where Naoya has both all the power and all the responsibility.
Yeah, there’s some kind of potential “sister wives” situation where they’re platonic, but that’s usually supported but a very unconventional belief and cultural situation.
I don’t really care if the story had been unrealistic in one guy in the middle of a functioning harem situation. It’s zany. With a character literally coming out and it going nowhere I’m frustrated.
I get that different magazines try to stick to certain subjects, but Jump imprints are putting out gay shit, now.
Gene is publishing the Sasaki and Miyano series and spin-offs. That series is massive over there.
tv, movie, novels.
The author is amazed that that company is putting out BL.
tl,dr: Companies that didn’t publish queer shit before are doing it, and this deserves a conversation AT LEAST.
The tl:
She’s also trying super hard for it to have retaliating things like anxiety about coming out, and the “am I? Can I? I want to, but can I..” struggles being more true to life. When I told here in chat during a stream she was massively relieved to hear that I, a homosexual woman, was moved to tears at this, she said she tried hard and was really nervous about getting it right.
I absolutely love the coming out to the family arcs. Goes so well for one of them that he doesn’t register. Tells his mom “I’m dating a guy”
She’s all “oh, you should introduce me some time.” Then he just keeps coming out and she has to reassure that she understands what he means, and it’s fine. He thanks her for being his mother. I’m tearing up, again.
I don’t want THAT in this zany gag story. I just want A CONVERSATION.
