Just a guess from me, but it might have to do with the buddhist idea of releasing attachements. Hoping means you are still attached to this world and therefor still bound into
Samsara, the endless circle of suffering. Only by freeing yourself from hoping, you free yourself from your attachments to this world and can reach the state of Nirvana like Buddha did.
