He have a affinity with the holy element for his angel race, therefore learnign holy magic was easier, he even trained it a lot, raising his skill level with it.
The reason the new spells are so weak in comparison to other magic users is simple, he doesn't have affinity with them, the ring only gave him the bare minimum to use the magic tome.
Maybe by using the spells more like the holy ones hw will be able to use them better, but that is putting the carriage before the horse, he should focus on his strong element and think about other stuff only after reaching a certain level, for now he is a master of rare trade, trying to become a jack of all will just mess up his growth.

A mini version of stone wall. If you make those the size of a foot or something, and you can spread them over a large area, you can make some very gnarly terrain to cross.

Judging by how adventurers are treated, they should have relatively high status, especially if they're strong.

This isn't about affinity at this point, the ring just raises some stats, and that by extension got his skills to the bare minimum for those spells. It's like how in the Fallout games you can eat some mentat candies to pass a skill check for lockpicking, science, or medicine.
But yeah, he can probably get better with practice, until he builds an affinity.

It doesn't do him any good to focus only on his strong suit though, since he's trying to hide his Holy magic, and for good reasons too. This isn't a min/max type of story.

Really liked the scientific approach to investigating magic, but the gas test with the mug is flawed.
the mug has ambient air in it, and if the gas produced by gentle breeze is denser than air, it would slide beneath it and won't enter the cup.
the cup should have been fully submerged without a internal air sack, so that it could be filled only with 100% generated gas.
then when lifting you would have to check for air currents, because if it's denser the gas would immediately escape (as when you are holding a cup of water upside down) and generate a wind current and the flame test would fail again.
so you can test it with:
light gas -> flame
dense gas -> current

Also "creating from nothing" doesn't necessarily imply illimitate increase of the planet's mass, because of e=mc^2 could apply to magic too if it is a form of energy.
which would be also a very likely hypotesis because magic is "consumed", and would likely be regenerated using body's nutrients like body's muscular kinetic energy, so it's not from nothing.

Considering he says it would be faster to use a shovel, and it takes him focusing on it, it isn't something he can do while fleeing. It isn't fast enough and takes too much effort.

Personally I think one of the biggest gains here is that he has obtained some spells that he can barely cast, and so should be great for training his magic related stats. He can also use it as an example for how much he improves by getting the spells from barely functional to normal when he isn't using the ring.
