Weird, the persimmons I had in Japan were pretty sweet. But this story takes place over 100 years in the past, so maybe the cultivars back then were more bitter.
That scene between Sugimoto and Asirpa was so touching the author almost tricked me into forgetting it was all taking place in Bambi's carcass.

persimmons are really tasty, either wait for them to ripen to the point where you can cut them in half and scoop up the stuff with a spoon, or less ripe by just cutting off the skin or to dry it. sweet tasty stuff with crunchy seeds
