The Whites were a political and military coalition opposed to the communist Reds and mostly anarchist Greens. They were initially monarchists but also gained support through the Red's persecution of peasants, social democrats, liberals, republicans, nationalists, and democratic socialists during the Russian Civil War of 1917. France, Great Britain and the US among others sent troops and material military aid in support of the Whites in order to prevent the spread of Bolshevism, but their troops were withdrawn fairly soon after thanks in the most part to a lack of public support following the end of WWI in 1918.
The Whites would ultimately be defeated in 1923, having had very few military successes, and the remaining leaders would go into exile.
