Final Thoughts
Absolutely brilliant storytelling by Asano takes the reader through the life of Punpun, who demonstrates how an average person deteriorates into the descent of loneliness and desperation, lending more and more of his psyche to darkness every day. We find out just how destructive this lifestyle of extreme isolation can be for someone who eventually allows themselves to become completely unhinged.
We explore the relatable topics of dreams, living in the past, fear, failure, loneliness, the passage of time, societal pressures, identity and much more. What can be made of a life of people raised by those who haven't even figured that question out for themselves?
There are twists, turns and developments that at times had me on the edge of my seat, burning through multiple chapters to get to the bottom of the situation, only to have left me with another unthinkable scenario to approach.
This can be a very intense read, and it's tough to recommend it outright to everyone. Its pages will offer insight and important life lessons demonstrated through a number of characters, but even still, someone who is in an extremely dark place in life or who has trouble with anxiety should approach this with as grounded of a perspective as they can manage, ready to take heed of any advice deemed worthy found throughout the chapters.
The art needs to be mentioned, and is unbelievable and Asano has improved his technique greatly coming from Solanin. Chock-full of enchanting close-ups and a number of full page spreads that you can't help but just take a moment to soak in. A truly gorgeous work from front to back.
Punpun shows what can easily happen to literally anyone, but can be avoided by everyone as well. Even if you think Punpun might not be for you, I think you owe it to yourself to find out first hand if that's the case. I'm so glad I didnt' pass this one up.
It's basically a masterpiece of storytelling - 100/100
