Typical Asano Inio work. Interesting beginning, okay middle, stupid and forced ending. I regret reading this manga. Blatantly manipulative, repetitive with the habit of building people up only to break them down, and people doing stupid things for no reason so "the plot can happen" in a form of idiot ball writing.

If you've never read anything like this, it might seem deep, but if you've read stuff like this before, especially previous works by this author, you see what his personal tropes are, and how he recycles the same ones over and over and has people do dumb, depressing shit to make you feel bad to "pull at your heartsrtings".

After a certain point it stops being compelling, and just something you expect like clockwork, and the "tragedy" of the characters becomes preventable stupidity that they could have easily avoided by doing things like use a phone, the internet, or going to the authorities.

I paid $2 a month to read this on Viz Manga, and think I paid too much. To be fair, I like some of Asano's works, but this is not among his better ones, and even some of his better ones have the flaw of falling apart at the end and devolving into bullshit that could easily be made into a Ryan George style pitch meeting, if he actually did those for manga or anime.

You’ll really never understand unless you see a sliver of yourself in the characters

Coming back about a month after reading and finishing to give a small review. (Spoilers everywhere ahead!!)

Ok so Everyone has their own opinions about Punpun but I'd say I absolutely despise him. Punpun is actually fucked up, I was crazy for a few days after finishing this. He was too stuck on one person and fucked up(Bikers Fault, NTA/j), that's crazy. This was my first Inio Asano book I've ever read and was introduced to Inio by this. Aiko deserved MUCH better, I personally say that Punpun should have died in some part of the story(after he grew up, ofc) instead of her. If he had, a lot would've been different. I'm angry Aiko died, she was my fav and she didn't do much. But, classic. Everyone is like "Sachis an asshole, fuck her!!" nd shit but I think she barely did anything. She was willing to help Punpun look for Aiko, all she did was ask him for his ideas because of that story he wrote when they first met. Not a review, actually. Just a crazy rant.

Out of everything that happened, 10/10. Quite the experience.

Just finished reading , ending was lame but dude i am at my lowest point , I am a horrible person and the saddest part of the story was when old real estate dude got hurt.Wasn't as deranged as most things i've read and I have a chimp brain so i'll prolly forget most of the things that happened in the story in a few weeks. I think the art is something I look up to a lot, which is rare but the way inio draws bodies is really extremely cool or soemthign :3 i like pegasus so much dude he's really awesome. punpun sux i see too much of myself in him, i wouldve been satisfied if he died i mean it was alright i guess

incredibly mid. the "art" everyone loves to glaze is just a bunch of black & white photographs. the story is kept going only by a series of contrived random encounters between characters, and decisions so poor they could only be made with the goal to deliberately self-destruct in mind. there's a lot of stuff that's done purely for shock value and nothing else, like the eyeball thing. the worst part was that they ran away at the end for no reason. they could have simply called the cops and claimed self-defense, it's not illegal to defend yourself in japan. like most misery porn, it's totally over-the-top avoidable BS that nobody would ever do or go through.

how you would have dealt with the situation does not constitute how another would. ripleys believe it or not, in real life people do make stupid decisions. you were young once, right? i believe the way it was written in (the murder and subsequent elopement) was written in well. two twenty somethings (19 y/os??) with virtually no positive parental guidence in either of their upbringings kill the girls mother, and you think the first thought on their minds would be “i should call the police”? at the net cafe punpun was looking up sentencing for murder and the like on the net. clearly this was not a situation he had given much thought towards prior to the killing. not to mention, try arguing self defense to a jury when the victim was strangled and subsequently stabbed to death while barely conscious. the court would fucking skewer you. you’d get the chair, bro. real talk they should’ve buried her legit. real real talk they should’ve never confronted her and just eloped. i wish inio had written in an alt ending post credits, but i KNOW it’s not that mfs style so i’m not hurt by it. i could use some dojin the fill the void in my heart, however. how aiko’s life came to an end pained me.

not to mention, those “black and white photographs” led to some of the most breathtaking pages i have ever experienced alongside the story. it gave this story and its world such a real and uniquely vast feeling. i binged this mother fucker in one night. i haven’t slept. it was so goddamn good i intend to buy the vis omnibuses. fuckin’. mint. overall, i gave this bad boy a nine.

there's no way to establish whether she was stabbed before or after strangulation. plus, most of aiko's wounds were old. this proves abuse, which proves self-defense. the japanese courts are famous for being incredibly conservative with the cases they prosecute, this is how they maintain a high conviction rate, above 90%. additionally, calling the cops in the first place is an indication of innocence. this is on top of the fact that she is known to have grown up in a cult. it's not that hard to imagine that an abusive, mentally ill cultist would attack someone. she was wearing aiko's clothes, ffs. all of that to say they had a solid chance at defense, if a murder trial was pursued at all. but yeah, there was really no reason to speak to her and it struck me as entirely out of character for punpun to force this confrontation. i'm still young now and i would not have made such decisions, i don't really think that's relevant. all of the conflict in the series is the result of contrivance and decisions too poor to be believable.

i disagree and i could find believability in it. your decided courses of action are not the baseline. i am not being argumentative for the sake of it, i really resonate with pun pun and the story as a whole. so much so that it brought me to tears. pun pun was as lucky as he was cursed by fate. he got to see the girl again, the woman who became his only reason for being, and was simultaneously forced to watch that same reason for being vanish before his eyes as a direct consequence of his own actions. i could see myself pursuing a similar course of action if the circumstances were mirrored. you may have a higher context of law and conviction in japan, but they did not. my analysis comes from me putting myself in their state of mind as well as i can. all in all i loved the story. aiko’s death was written on the wall before she hung herself and when he found her corpse i was distraught. i don’t believe their story could’ve ended any other way, though. the author weaved a fantastic and fluid story with characters whose very nature and lived experiences hit so close to home it was surreal. unlike pun pun i had to follow a journey of silent strife and find a new reason for being to fill the void she burned into me. it sounds corny saying it out loud, but it was a painful journey, one that made me who i am today. given the choice i wouldn’t change a thing about my past. it’s thanks to my experiences that i rediscovered what it means to live in the present and look forward to the future. i hope you are having a good day when you read this bro. thanks for bantering with me.

tl;dr my context was my lived experiences, as such that is why pun pun’s character and the journey he embarked upon was believable (to me). sorry for the effortpost bro, but this manga has soul.

they were both suffering terribly prior to their reacquaintance, and being together may have alleviated their pain if things hadn’t devolved as they did. fate is cruel. regardless, i thought it was a stunning foire into the human condition. ‘94, rugged raw. it was beautiful, man.
