It might be a matter of conserving wood.

At his current level, he only needs to tap stuff to dig even with an axe, so the speed doesn't seem to matter unless he's in full runaway through rock mode.

But the Axe was for dismantling the bed properly to make sure he didn't miss out on any wood items. Plus the damage. It's really no trouble to make an axe, pick, and shovel though. Most setups leave enough leeway for that much.

Called it! Used the bed for wood to make a tool. Odd he made an axe but I guess he didn’t have enough stones for a pickax.

By Minecraft logic,it takes the same amount of stone to make both.

Other survival logic,though,the axe is a bit less.

In the LN, MC did consider doing that, but gave-up as he didn't want to waste much time as he wasn't sure when the guards take round.
