Personally I blame the axe entirely on the author wasting too much time in the beginning fight with the bandit dude that was supposed to be just the "intro boss", instead on focusing on developing the characters first in the early chaps.

Personally, when I saw how the MC changed from a crafter to someone who is just plain OP at fights with crafting skills a couple volumes back, I felt that something was wrong and the author wanted to make the series more popular. Instead, I think it ended up making it lose its niche, though it’s hard to say whether it would have survived otherwise or not.
