I believe he understood that his sister wanted to protect him, since it's unknown what his father would do to him. He would kill him or worse, turn him into a slave. At least being expelled would give him a better chance of survival. I've seen some works where the protagonist wasn't expelled, but suffered severe abuse for years before escaping.
