MC is really smart, he just finds it hard to refuse from being pushed around. If you consider he was a modern person, there's a lot of behavioral variables as to why that is.

Thanks for the release. Glad to get another release from this so soon.

This whole 'mission' seems kind of fishy and strange, but it's too early to really tell. I was hoping we'd see that new girl meeting up with them and seeing how that played out.

@lionfromnorth - Plot Twist: This story takes place on Yardrat in the past, and shows how Yardratian humans fall while the new civilization rises. :O

You know what really irritates me about this story?
How every time the characters will do something stupid and illogical just to progress the story. First they gave up a lot of money because it would be "useless" to them and now the MC, again, is unable to say no.
90% of the plot of this manga was easily avoided by the simple word "no" being said at any time at all.

The only reason I haven't dropped this yet is because I'm an idiot that has the compulsion to finish what it starts reading otherwise I would have been out on chapter 5.

@Merilirem - Good point, it's entirely possible; hopefully it's true, too. I guess it depends on if his "split" from his family is public knowledge or not. Honestly, I haven't done a re-read, so I don't remember. I know his new title automatically separates him from them in some ways, but that's all. Guess we'll just have to wait and see how it all plays out -- hopefully your right.

Silly question, but is MC in a position to refuse the requests that come his way? Considering that the requesters are from the more influential, upper tiers of nobility, and you know what they say about the backstabbing nature of noble society (he says no, people accuse him of insubordination, more trouble occurs.)

@zz2000 he totally could the only people in the kingdom strong enough to oppose him are armstrong and braetack and neither of them care for politics so if he said no I refuse the king would not likely push it since he could wind up losing all three, I mean he is a walking nuke just he has no ambition or will of his own which is why he keeps getting the raw end of the deal

Did you miss the part where they said that it troubles them? They were getting slandered.
One way they could ever use that much money is to start a new territory, which explained was that it doesn't guarantee success and that you have a lot to lose if you fail. It goes to say that starting a merchant company when you don't have the vision, connections, nor the skills wouldn't work out either. Even then, the issue with their reputation wouldn't be solved if they kept the money for themselves.
They only really want to serve under the MC, so the money is only useful for equipping themselves with.

is unable to say no.
The one asking for a request is a margrave, a much higher rank than he is. MC would unnecessarily draw the ire of other nobles if he were to ignore the hierarchy.
The margrave is acquainted with his master, generously rewarded him for bringing him back the margrave's assets, and I assume also has facilitated the inheritance of his master's assets. So MC kinda owes him.
Also, there's a very good reason to cull the undead in that forest, more than for the sake of the nobles and the feudal lord of that territory. It's also the church's responsibility, who he is tied to through his fiancee.
There's no reason to say no at all.

As mentioned above, refusing this sort of quest from that certain person is more trouble than it's worth. He's knee-deep into politics, and his interests would have to align with the kingdom.

If we're to compare this to some modern society, it would be like being in a village in the middle of nowhere where everybody knows each other, and going against the status quo will risk you getting ostracized. You don't want to be ostracized when you're living in the middle of nowhere. The village would be the whole kingdom, and the residents would be the noble families and large factions.

@jonsmth Just to correct you, there are plenty of reasons to say no. But the reasons for saying yes outweighs them by far.😉

ah that's right
I was outlining reasons to say "yes".

the only reason to say "no" is fear for their own safety - fighting against thousands of undead. then again, they already fought an ever-reviving army before. was there anything i missed?

@jonsmth Well, there's also the fact that Wendelin feels he's being coerced, and his poor relationship with the lord of the territory. But he already dismissed both, the former by lack of objection and the latter verbally. His retainers would be free to decline, though, since he never gave them any order.

Implying it's fine since they faced the golem army is an iffy argument, in my opinion. Baumeister stated it depends on the situation, and his godfather agreed.

The part about the money is just a bad excuse to maintain the status quo and you know it. The reasons given are stupid and unrealistic.
There is one reason to say no, the best reason there is for it, he doesn't want to do it. As he said himself there is no bound between him and his family, there is no reason for him to do something he doesn't want to for them is there is nothing forcing his hand and in this case there isn't one. Heck for most of the manga there is no reason for him to do anything he doesn't want to other than the MC being a simp that can't say "no".
