Did you forget how and why he can use these powers now? The whole two chapters dedicated to him acquiring the ability to channel the powers of ghosts with the armbands?

Like there's some points of bad writing in the story, but this isn't one of them. There was set up in him acquiring this ability, hard downsides established, and him refusing an opportunity to potentially shackle his ghost family in order to have more permanent use of their powers.

You could be thinking of the original work as well as that the MC was also weak but his ability allowed him to "steal" powers, while this MC "borrows" powers.
