Ask the UFC. They didn't want the Dog brothers, for example. Supposedly because their style (Kali Tudo, which, in their own "gatherings", also allows the use of rattan sticks) was "too extreme" and "would attract political foes for being too brutal".
As for what they can do, there's enough videos online. They fight with minimal protection, both armed and unarmed, and without a judge. Their fights usually last a few seconds or a minute at most, which I assume was what the UFC was worried about. You can't show advertisements if the fights are over that fast.

@superoniichan yeah I mean if we didn’t have a 50 chapter tournament arc (that has gone on for years!) the main story would have continued to focused on Misora’s gradually escalating sexual appetite. But I guess now that it’s taken a backseat with this arc it’s likely going to get wilder especially since Rui made it explicit hes returning to that haha

@justjorge I still can't believe that my random joke that the plot of this manga develops precisely through the hentai-ish chapters is more and more true, lol.

@Ulfhednar Kali Tudo? Does this have anything to do with the Vale Tudo wrestling? I heard about Kali sticks, yes.

No, it's just a pun based on it.
I heard about Kali sticks, yes.
That's basically what it is. Kali is one of the names for the FMA (besides, Arnis, Escrima, and a few others). Traditionally, short rattan sticks are used for contact-sparring, since rattan is so flexible that even a hit at full strength won't break bones or teeth (can confirm that from personal experience). That's the so-called "Kali Stick".

Kali Tudo is an attempt to make this art usable in legal competitions, which evolved from the Dog Brothers' sparring meetups ("gatherings of the pack", many of which you can find on youtube). Unlike the dog brothers, it requires a minimum of protection (groin, lacrosse gloves, fencing mask) and has the usual rules (weight classes, rounds, judge that can stop the fight etc). However, as they use headprotection, they don't restrict strikes all that much, and most of their fights end after a takedown and ground-and-pound. Kinda like pre-ban UFC was.

I'm admittedly biased (I'm practising a closely related style), but I'd claim that it's as realistic as fighting can get without breaking any laws.

So, the dance/ritual was actually part of something representative of the sport and the character design actually has that much attention to detail? Goddamnit, Rui doing his research like all authors should. And Odoritomaki doing it to explain it is just poggers.

@SuperOniichan How does it feel getting shot in the foot like that? HAHA. In retrospective, at which point did the theme of Misora's sexual appetite became so ridiculously important to the plot? I want to blame it ALL on Akira as I always do, but that wouldn't be completely true if not true at all.

@beggarSoChan2020l2r3

Holy shit and the guy locking wins after getting thrown 4 times, wth. Thanks for that, it's always nice seeing those moves in actual real life action.

@Ulfhednar Don't worry about biassed, my knowledge of martial arts is mostly encyclopedic and superficial. I am obsessed with media about martial arts, but in real life I only had the opportunity to learn karate and some time wushu at school. So, the guys from the UFC decided that Kali Tudo is too OP for them and not suitable for a good show? It reminded me of the story of how Daimbeg Darell was stopped being invited to guitar competitions, becauce at the age of 16 he was already too good for many adult competitors.

@Raknasuu The dance is a fairly well-known ritual in Thai martial arts , but that does not negate the fact that Rui and Odoritomaki really did their best to do their parts of work. I was not exaggerating when I said that martial arts are the best part of Rui's content. Knowing him, I am even a little surprised that he turned into
trans
another character. This could be the another perfect combination of his love of fighting and weird lewdness lol.

Yeah, pretty much. There was an open letter back then, in which they wrote that they were worried about possible loss of viewers and political opposition (as you may know, UFC had been previously banned too and had to massively increase restrictions to become legal again).

@kanjutbautai I appreciate the effort you put into matching my bolded writing style, ahhaha. It's time consuming, isn't it?

@ohms That makes me really happy to hear! There aren't nearly enough resources on the English internet about Thai language and culture. I'm glad to do my part!

@justjorge Hell yeah, brother. You always have the hook-up for the latest Hagure Idol news. Let's see if we can catch up by then!!

@KochengOren Yeah, I've been doing a lot of research into them as a result! I don't know how much I'll be able to talk about them, because nobody in this tournament directly practices Southern Chinese styles, but we'll see!

@Ulfhednar You're right, I should have made it more clear that Karate was an off-shoot of Tii and not a direct continuation. I'm also going to be talking more about the UFC and how it has shaped modern MMA in later chapters. However, I stand firm on calling the Japanese martial art "Jujutsu" rather than "Jiujitsu." That is the current way of translating 柔術 under Hepburn Romanization. I'll do more research into German Ju-Jutsu. Maybe Dorothea Von Schleicher will incorporate it into her kickboxing?

@Ulfhednar To be honest, while MMA isn't really my cup of tea, I never really understood why normies think it's too cruel. In my opinion, this is much more civilized and cleaner than real fights in some bar or night street. Especially in Russia, where the occasional drunken stabbing is a common feature of crime news reports.

@Raknasuu Well, while it sounds as dumb as possible, her libido is one of the main, if not the most, key to her further development as a person. And for all my salty attitude towards Akira, it's not really her fault. She made Misora more honest, but she also satisfied her rather than somehow made her horny. This point will be explored in the next and 10th volumes. It is possible that thanks to their relationship, she even somehow slowed down the horny Misora's volcano.

@Odoritomaki First Brazilians, then Russians, now Thais. Hell, Odori-san (okay, if I call you that?), if things continue at this pace, you will do more good to the world than the UN, lol.

@odoritomaki the tournament is set to end next August (or if he means August issue of Goraku then July). You started this in like March right? So I’m pretty sure we’ll be more than caught up by that point and could even get close to day and date translations (or whatever timeframe is reasonable for you) by then!

I was in a stream yesterday. We were talking about how people on reddit think that including female characters in Kenran Ashura would be too un-realistic while the body types of the male characters on the franchise already are in the first place. Long story, short: Don't be fucking hypocrites and admit that you simply don't wanna see women in your testosterone filled-manga.

We started talking about alternatives that did include strong female characters. I couldn't recommend this yet again LOL. I just said "You don't know what you are asking for" and left.

@justjorge So, at some point we will get to the translation of raw chapters and I will receive new details immediately with their translation? Sounds like a pretty good idea.

@Raknasuu Haha, you were like those mysterious old man, who tell stupid teenagers "further dangerous shit, turn around and never come back here" in horror movies. But joking aside, I think it's okay as long as the characters go well with setting and premise. For example, the female characters in Tekken have always been idealized for the most part (I readily believe that an experienced killer and mercenary can look like a hostess in a bar), but the franchise had a deliberately grotesquely cartoonish world, so that was okay for me.

In that note: I tend to prefer horror/terror where the protagonist is actually "forced" to the situation. If we talk about games, that's the reason Whistleblower is more fullfilling than vanilla Outlast for me. Hell, even the justification of RE7 is better than "I'm looking for a story and I'm willing to get killed because of it" (Or maybe is cringey because I have training in journalism myself and one of the first things they tell you is "If you end up cut in pieces and thrown to the river who's gonna tell the story for you? Don't get killed.")

When stupid, bratty teenagers get killed because of them not paying attention to the mysterious old man that advices them to gtfo I don't feel sorry for them. I laugh.

The back of my house takes to a forest where, from time to time, the police finds bags with the dismembered bodies of gang members and prostitutes. Does that count?
