To be fair, that and the matriarchal social structure is a thing of spotted hyenas (a.k.a. laughing hyenas), which are the modern-day "generic" hyena that everyone thinks of, that live in central to south Africa. Striped hyenas (Hyaena hyaena, i.e. the one more famous in antiquity) are a bit more widespread (living from central to North Africa through the Middle East and through to the Indian subcontinent) and both fluffier and more chill. Striped hyenas are monogamous with the waifu and husbando about the same size and sharing in duties.

The spotted pattern on Hyena-chan's undershirt definitely solidifies what sort of cat-running-dog-software she's supposed to be.
