I like this setup for Ippo's relationships. With this, Kumi is forced to either let Ippo return momentarily to the sparring ring, or risk her brother losing. All in all, she'll probably come to hate boxing even more.

The thing is, Ippo's trying to be a trainer right now, so getting in the ring for spars isn't much different. I'm honestly surprised it didn't come to him that he could be the one to help train Mashiba.

Not only is ippo dense, he has a huge habit of underselling himself. He could be in the same weight class as mashiba and not be retired, and he still wouldnt think hes a worthy sparring partner.
And yeah i agree that not being a southpaw isnt that much of an issue for him considering his style. Hell, ippo doesnt even use jabs which would be the biggest difference between the two styles
