I'm OK with this. Weirdly, I've enjoyed the manga a lot more since his retirement.

Its such a weird thing. Idk what inspired the choice or if it was always on the table but at this point the manga is about the life of ippo and boxing. Loving it too but I can't help in my heart to want to see him come back.

So fun fact. I have a friend who really likes Ippo. Like it's his favorite character, to the point that he told me that he skipped every fight where Ippo loses, and this was before the one that made him retire. I haven't been able to talk to that friend about this series ever since then. I told myself that once Ippo comes out of retirement I'll be able to tell him "hey, Ippo's back!" But it's been YEARS! 😭

It's guaranteed that the author will eventually have Ippo step back into the ring, if only for a small stretch of in-world time to reach Ricardo Martinez proper.
He's described as Kamogawa's greatest boxer project (they note Takamura was mostly complete before he ever did anything), Takamura is being referenced to have a disaster in the ring eventually with the greater and greater focus on his eye and indications it is damaged, and they show, despite being retired, Ippo's skills as a boxer has only increased, to the point the world-class boxers he has sparred with are just baffled he classifies as retired with the amount of progress he's made.
