I believe it was mentioned in the anime, it really was Sawamura's only background and connection so I'd honestly be surprised if they did leave it out. I just finished the Miyata vs Randy fight

Sendo is awesome, but since when does he have a World Title opportunity (even if distant)? At this point all he is is a former Japan National Champ with a very brief reign at that.
