I agree @Koal Aoki and Kimura as characters have really tanked and what was a serious boxing manga with a few jokes here and there mixed in with proper training arcs, have now turned into big matches against the "worst matchups" and Aoki and Kimura who were higher ranked boxers before now lose to no names and become gags

I agree with you about the decline of this as a (relatively) serious boxing manga to one with too much nonsense (lots of gags, matches not taken seriously, less training), but I sort of disagree about Aoki and Kimura.

Those two were always mid-ranked Japanese boxers. They could not even top things within their own country, let alone be a serious threat in the wider world. It was always clear too that they were forced to really struggle for wins.

I would rather see them lose, than have them being inexplicably portrayed as somewhat legit contenders in matches while being clowns at the gym. It will be interesting to see how Morikawa handles the upcoming A-list tournament.

You are right, my wording for how I described Aoki and Kimura as higher ranking doesn't really fit lol. I think I meant it more as instead of them being higher rank, they used to be more serious boxer who would have serious bouts and attempt to climb the ranks, as opposed to being in gag matches before every big fight. I would just like them to be more serious characters who experience gags on the side, instead of being gags themselves.

Also just to be clear, I in no way am trying to insult Morikawa's writing or the manga itself because Hajime no Ippo is still one of my all time favorites, it's just some small things I wish were a bit different

have you seen the popularity polls? serious Kimura always gets lower ratings than Aoki, but jobber Kimura is much closer

the Japanese readers just didn't like serious Kimura fights I guess
