I dont think he is, but as an typical dad he has hiden his debt and shortness of money from the family until it could not be hiden anymore, and is just asking for help at the very last moment, as his son could lose the treatment. I have seen that a lot with money and "its just a little pain in the knee/blood in pee/heart pains/etc so i left it alone and never told you all about it, it was under control until now".

With both families in the same room and a lot of pressure and stress about all that's goin on, i wonder if the secret is gonna leak out...
